Caught the only morning train out of Siena at 8:04. Got into Chiusi at 9:30. Our tickets from there to Rome were not until 1:45. Tried to exchange tickets but the lady said they were non transferable. So bought new tickets for less than 20e and left at 10:57 instead. Knowing what I know now, I would not have bought any regional train tickets. Price is the same from a machine or in advance. There are no assigned seats anyway. The main train tickets I would have bought in advance, but no train pass. The pass did not save much when the tickets were bought 3 months in advacnce, second class, and economy. Train ran behind schedule, but we still arrived a lot earlier. Found the hotel near the train station the first try
Had late lunch and got on the Hop on and off Bus $16/person, and rode it the whole circuit to orient us to Rome. Worked well in Washington DC last spring. In the morning we have early entry to the Vantican Museum and Saint Peter's. 7:30 early!
Farmland varied, corn, sunflower plants, and vineyards, lots of plowed fields. Many areas are just trees, not pasture or farms. Some of the hills were steep, with some soil erosion.
