Sunday, Sept 13 Olympus

Docked early at Katakolan to go to the original site of the Olympic Games. We boarded a tour bus to drive to the site. This was transportation only, so the only input we got from the driver or assistant was the drop off and pickup instructions. Oh, she did explain why there was garbage piled up. I do remember the news saying there were riots because the garbage was not being picked up. I guess it still is not being picked up. People are just pilling it up outside old town along the shoulders. You'd think city leaders would get together and fix the problem!
Anyway, surprised me that the site was a ways inland, about 30 minute drive. Nice little town located at the site. Not very large site. Again had to use your imagination to visualize what it looked like. What I have come to realize is this whole area is not so different from the rest of the world. If left alone, parts disappear. So if someone needed some marble, it moved. If someone paid enough for it, it moved. A earthquake or two and it came down. Same thing all over.
Artists painted for whomever paid, and what they paid for. Artists copied others work to learn and to make money. It takes about 8 years to build something. Whether it was 2000 years ago or today. Building departments and engineers for those departments wee issuing permits hundreds of years ago, making people annoyed even then. And everyone had the first water systems and sewers!
